Unconcealedness

Dunes is pleased to announce Unconcealedness, a two-person exhibition featuring new works by Matt Paweski and Carla Weeks. There will be an opening on September 5th from 6-8pm. Both artists work within tightly controlled vocabularies, tracing an evasive line of flattening and unflattening drawn from architecture, design, and their respective histories of absorbing natural forms. In dialogue, their practices draw out recurring motifs and the ways structure can be reconfigured through repetition and layering. Paweski's sculptural practice operates in the space between ornament and utility, drawing on the legacies of early modern design and the decorative arts. His works - incorporating wood for the first time in over a decade - are executed through a set of precise, almost rudimentary moves, revealing a language that is simultaneously graphic and dimensional. Paweski reintroduces sensuousness and play into forms often associated with industrial rigidity, producing objects that sit between the animated and the stoic. Weeks approaches painting as a way to navigate memory, attachment, and the resonance of place. Working from an archive of architectural details, furniture, and landscapes tied to personal histories, she constructs layered compositions of repeated, minimal forms.
