In New York during the 1960s and 1970s, young architects such as Richard Dattner and Paul Friedberg became the Young Turks of radical urban playground design. In this talk, James will give a preview of his 2024 book with Princeton Architectural Press on how new forms of avant-garde art-making and urban design found common cause with movements for social and racial justice with the object of expanding and revolutionizing the concept of play. James Trainor is a writer, critic and scholar who writes about art and the history of contemporary visual culture, design, architecture, and urbanism. His columns, essays, editorials, interviews and reviews have appeared in numerous publications including Artforum, Art in America, Bomb, Cabinet, and Metropolis, as well as Frieze magazine, where he was US Editor and a staff writer from 2001-2010.

Engaging this paranormal tradition, Tyler Coburn and Ian Hatcher will lead two workshops that instruct participants in the technique of remote viewing, a form of psychic espionage developed by the U.S. government during the Cold War. Remote Viewer is presented by Dunes as part of Body Double, a series of events organized by Nicole Kaack, that explores presence, virtuality, and transference.
